 Saint Marguerite d'Youville

Saint Marguerite d’Youville was born in Varennes, Quebec, on October 15, 1701. She attended the Ursuline Convent in Quebec until 1714. In 1722, she married Francois You de la Decouverte in Notre Dame Catholic Church, Montreal. In 1727, she joined the confraternity of the Holy Family and her devotion to the Eternal Father became the focal point of her life. Tragically, her husband died on July 4, 1730, at thirty years of age, leaving her with two sons, Francois and Charles (who later became priests).

On December 31, 1737, Marguerite and several friends, who had been helping care for the poor and needy in their homes, consecrated themselves unreservedly to God for the rest of their lives, to serve the poor. This was the beginning of the Sisters of Charity, later to be known as the Grey Sisters.

In 1747, Marguerite accepted the administration of the dilapidated Hospital General des Freres Charon. Through industry, creativity and charity, she raised up the declining institution and improved the quality of care. Marguerite suffered the ordeals of war, famine, fire and personal health challenges, but nothing could discourage her. Her confidence in God the Father was steadfast. She died on December 23, 1771. To this day, St. Marguerite d’Youville manifests tenderness to those who pray with confidence.

Marguerite d’Youville is the first Canadian born person to become a Saint. In naming our school after her, the long service of the Grey Sisters in Whitby is also recognized.

St. Marguerite d'Youville Catholic School Prayer

Saint Marguerite d'Youville
I beg of you,
Wherever I may be, whatever I may do,
Take me by the hand and lead me to Jesus.
Together let us walk the Way;
The one where Jesus is recognized in the poor,
The abandoned, the sick, the forgotten.
Walk with me in the light of the Truth that is Jesus,
So that one day with you
I may enjoy Life everlasting. Amen.

St. Marguerite d'Youville, pray for us.

 Our School Community

St. Marguerite d’Youville Catholic School is a vibrant school community of approximately 230 students and 25 teachers and support staff. We are supported in our educational efforts by the parish of St. John the Evangelist Church and All Saints Catholic Secondary School. These partnerships are consolidated with open and regular communications and the sharing of numerous events and celebrations. Home, school and parish cooperate in forming the heart and spirit of our school community.

At St. Marguerite d’Youville Catholic School, every day begins with prayer. School Masses and Liturgies are scheduled regularly throughout the school year to celebrate the gift of our school and its uniqueness as a Catholic community of living and learning.

 St. John the Evangelist Church

The home parish for St. Marguerite d’Youville Catholic School is St. John the Evangelist. The parish invites you to celebrate the sacred Liturgy each weekend and to take part in all parish social events. In this way, we are a truly caring, Christian community.

 Parking and Kiss & Ride
For the "Kiss and Ride" program vehicles are to stop inside the solid line on the right hand side of the parking lot. Vehicles can not be left unattended here, it is strictly a drop and go or pick up and go, no parking, or leaving vehicle. If you want to walk your child to the gates of the yard, please park in a parking space and escort your child to the fence. Please remember during the school day there are no parents/guardians on or in the school playground. This is for the safety of all students.
 Inclement Weather Conditions
If weather conditions force the cancellation of transportation services or classes, notification will be given by all local radio stations. Please note that when only the transportation has been cancelled, the school will remain open and classes will proceed. If Transportation is cancelled it means all day – no busses in the am or pm. Please check the local radio stations (KX96, CKDO 1350, CFRB 1010, CHUM 1050 or 680 News). Cancellation information will also be posted on the Board’s website at www.dcdsb.ca.
Breakfast Program
Beginning at 8:05 a.m. interested students are welcomed to enjoy a nutritious breakfast as they arrive at school. Parent volunteers and staff prepare and supervise the program at 8:20 a.m.
 Lunch Procedures

Students who stay at school for lunch are expected to observe the guidelines and expectations, which have been established and clearly explained to them. Staff members and lunch hour supervisors supervise them during the lunch hour.

Grade 7 & 8 with parental permission are allowed to leave school property during lunch. Primary and Junior students (Grades K-6) are not permitted to leave the school property unless signed out and accompanied by a parent/guardian. No food or drink is to be brought back to the school by the Grade 7 & 8 students. Food and drinks are not permitted in the yard due to student safety.

In our attempt to reduce the amount of garbage we generate at the school, we would encourage all students to bring a “litterless” lunch to school daily.

 Parent Involvement Committee

Our Parent Involvement Committee is a group of dedicated, hardworking parents, community members and staff who devote time and energy into making “SMD the place to BE!”.

This is a great way to be involved in your child’s school. All parents are welcome to our meetings whether they are a member of council or not. The council is always looking for extra voices and volunteers.
